Leaving the Ghibli Museum par Peter E. Lee

The kids and Michelle heading around the inner courtyard from the cafe toward the exit of the Studio Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Japan. Studio Ghibli is the animation studio that has created some of my favorite films of all time, including "My Neighbor Totoro," "Kiki's Delivery Service," "Princess Mononoke" and "Spirited Away." I've been a fan ever since I first saw an undubbed VHS copy of "My Neighbor Totoro" at a science fiction convention in 1989. Although he's not the only talented director at Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki, in particular, is truly a genius. The mutual respect and friendship beteen Miyazaki and John Lasseter has led to Disney releasing very well done English Language dubs of pretty much the entire Studio Ghibli catalog here in the US and ensured the theatrical release of the last several as well. No photography is allowed inside the museum, unfortunately, but I spotted at least two wine bottles autographed by John Lasseter on the bookshelves in the recreation of Miyazaki's study. There's also an amazing 3D zoetrope of Totoro that inspired the Toy Story zoetrope at Disney's Hollywood Studios, and a Totoro toy plays a small part in Toy Story 3. Anyway, it's a smallish but absolutely beautiful museum. Being able to visit it was one of the highlights of my trip to Japan.
